Pre-Roman settlement, it develops on the ridge that cuts the Verrino Valley, on a territory with interesting naturalistic and landscape ideas. It presents natural riches and typical and enchanting places, such as the water mill in the Scatozza area; the large coniferous woodlands but also the Tratturi crossed by the flocks to move to Capitanata. Famous for its Bells (here the Pontifical Marinelli Foundry operates) but also for the archaeological evidence, the ancient village with its churches and elegant palaces. Interesting to dive into the traditions such as the 'Ndocciata, which every year transforms the streets of the city into a river of fire.
The ancient Frentum of the Frentani, an Italic people in constant struggle with the Romans, presents significant evidence of its origins and of the history of the civilizations that, from the Samnites onwards, have succeeded one another on its Territory. Worth visiting are the Amphitheater, the Roman mosaics from the imperial era but also the Cathedral with Gothic features and a thirteen-ray rose window.
Located along the Volturno River Valley, an ancient connecting route between Campania and Abruzzo, it features remains of Roman domus. The large theater and the Verlasce (an ancient district built on the plan of the pre-existing Roman Theater) are the symbols of the city. Worth visiting medieval and baroque buildings, churches and ancient palaces. The Pandone Castle is sublime, located on a hill that dominates the city.
If you are looking for traces of the past and want to get lost in the places of ancient history, we suggest you visit Altilia Sepino (Saepinum), the excavated city, an incredibly well-preserved testimony of a city of the Roman province. In the ruins of the archaeological area of Altilia Sepino (for some the little Pompeii), the visitor will be able to live a suggestive experience in contact with history, in a place that still retains all the characteristics of the ancient urban structure.
The Roman city of Saepinum stands at the crossroads of two important roads: the Pescasseroli-Candela sheep track and the road that connects the Matese to the coast. The area occupies a surface of about 12 hectares with a square plan, surrounded by a reticulated wall.
It is located just outside the town center: it is 234 meters long and is 140 meters high to launch yourself into the canyon dug by the waters of the stream. You can walk along it in complete safety as the walkway is made up of metal bands to which you can hold on. The bridge can be visited for free and to get there you have to get to the top of the village, near the ruins of the Castle and follow the signs to reach the foot of the bridge.
