Also known as
the “mountain of the sun”, Gargano evokes for millions of tourists very
renowned destinations such as Vieste, Peschici, Rodi Garganico but also areas of particular
importance such as the Gargano Park with the Umbra Forest and the
Protected Marine Area of the Tremiti Islands.
Riviera villages that overlook the sea but also vast areas rich in
different habitats and biodiversity. It is a rich and varied habitat, as it is
difficult to find in Italy. The authentic puzzle of environments concentrated in
such a small territory make Gargano more of an island than a mountain, which
moreover only reaches 1,065 meters with Mount Calvo.
Gargano is a promontory that features vast areas covered by coastal forests of pines and holm oaks and by almond, orange and olive groves. The low and sandy coast in the northern stretch gradually becomes steep with high limestone cliffs that open onto coves of very fine sand, very popular in the summer months. The interior is largely covered by the vegetation of the Umbra Forest that surrounds the promontory with beech and pine trees, constituting the heart of the Gargano National Park. In this lush vegetation, perhaps the richest in southern Italy, are the towns that, especially inland, have preserved their ancient structure, with winding alleys and white houses: Vieste, San Menaio, Peschici, Mattinata.
